Estonia's 2011 e-census off to successful start

In the first 24 hours of the online Population and Housing Census launched on December 31, around 27,000 people filled out the questionnaire via the internet.

Six thousand had completed the questionnaire by 9:00, Kristo Mäe of Statistics Estonia told

"We can consider the beginning of the census a success, because the online census took off smoothly," said Priit Potisepp, Director General of the statistics agency, adding that the interest towards the e-census was high beyond expectation.

The 2011 census, which is the 11th modern census to take place since 1881, will be carried out from December 31 through March 31, 2012. In the first month questionnaires can be completed online. Households not participating in the online census will be visited by enumerators starting in February.

Estonia’s most recent population census took place in 2000, putting the figure at 1.37 million.
